Male - distinct white ring between green head and rusty breast. Yellow bill, dark blue wing patch or speculum with white border on top and bottom. White outer tail feathers.
Female - uniform mottled brown body, orange and brown bill. Wing same as male.
Other Common Names - Male - Greenhead. Female - Gray Duck, Susie.
Scientific Name - Anas platyrhynchos (a duck with a broad bill).
SIMILAR:
American Black Duck has similar sexes, dark dusky brown body with slightly lighter head and purple speculum.
Mottled Duck has similar sexes, tawny brown body with pale head and yellowish bill.
